Prosthetics and Orthotics

Prosthetists care for patients needing an artificial limb, due to accident, amputation or those born without. The role would include making a plaster cast or digital image of the limb where the prosthesis is to be fitted.

Orthotists are concerned with providing some kind of apparatus, such as a splint, brace or special footwear to aid movement, correct deformity, reposition the body and relieve discomfort in those who need this to support or control a part of their body.

Both Prosthetists and Orthotists advise on fitting the prosthesis or orthosis as well as rehabilitation. (Source: www.nhscareers.nhs.uk).
