Perfusionists are members of the open-heart surgery team and are mainly responsible for the operation of the heart-lung machine and monitoring the patient’s condition throughout an operation.
The Perfusionist uses various devices to ensure that oxygen reaches a patient’s body through the blood, even when their lungs and heart are temporarily not functioning. (Source: www.nhscareers.nhs.uk).
