An endoscopy is a non surgical medical procedure which is used to view the digestive tract (and other internal organs). An endoscope, (a long flexible tube with a lighted camera attached, is used to examine the inside of the body and pictures are relayed to a monitor to for viewing by the physician. Endoscopy nurses are experienced in the assessment, planning and implementation of direct and indirect nursing care for patients in the endoscopy setting. They also assist in performing procedures and help to maintain the endoscopes and other specialised equipment used in endoscopic and non-endoscopic procedures within the endoscopy suite.
