Life as a Locum Pharmacy Technician

Hi I’m tammy, I have been qualified as a pharmacy technician for just over a year now and after qualifying decided that I would like to try out being a locum pharmacy technician. I had heard mixed things about it from friends and colleagues but wanted to step out of my comfort zone and I’m so glad I did!

After looking online and applying for a few positions I was soon contacted and bombarded by different agencies who asked me briefly what I was looking for, where I was willing to travel to etc. As I don’t have any ties I was flexible to move elsewhere if the right thing come about which recruitment agencies love as it makes their search much wider. Some agencies like you to have had at least 6 months experience before becoming a locum pharmacy technican but the agency I joined didn’t.  About a week later after filling out the application forms and sending off my documentation to be compliant, they had already found a position for me at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London as a locum pharmacy technician. I had to make a quick decision within a few hours but I decided to accept and started just 3 days later! I live in Essex so I could still live at home and commute every day but it was still a big step as I had said in the past that working in London wasn’t for me but I couldn’t miss an opportunity in such a big and well known hospital, and it really broadened my knowledge working in paediatrics as I had little experience in this department before then.

This is just one of few benefits that being a locum pharmacy technician bring as I explain in “The benefits of being a locum pharmacy technician”. My contract at Great Ormond Street was initially for 3 months which was perfect as I was planning a trip to Australia and New York and I found the travel a struggle so I left in February for a well-deserved break. When coming home from my travels in April within a week I was back to work again this time in Canterbury Kent as a locum pharmacy technician. I decided as I didn’t like the long commute to London that this time I would relocate and moved into the hospital accommodation which was a 5 minute walk away from the hospital, perfect! My locum pharmacy agency sorted out everything for me so all I had to do is pick up the keys on arrival, initially I was unsure as it was the first time moving away from all friends and family but I soon felt at home. I lived in a house share with other professionals who were all lovely! In the summer we had BBQs in the garden and everyone was so welcoming as you were all in the same boat. The job was great too, I made so many friends and was made feel really welcome like part of the team. I was there for nearly five months and I can say that it was the best decision I’ve made as I had an amazing time. Meeting new people, learning new skills, exploring new surroundings and much more!!
